California overwhelmingly passed Proposition 50 on Tuesday, which will potentially add five Democratic seats to the US House of Representatives as opposed to Republicans in Texas.
The Associated Press called the election for Proposition 50 shortly after polls closed Tuesday night.
“California voters approved new congressional district boundaries Tuesday, marking a victory for Democrats in the state-by-state redistricting battle that will help determine which party will win control of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2026,” the AP noted.
Republicans hold 219 seats in the US House of Representatives, while Democrats hold 213; those five seats in the 2026 midterms could make a huge difference in the balance of power. California Governor Gavin Newsom strongly backed Proposition 50, promising that it would be a bulwark against President Trump.
“California’s Proposition 50 called on voters to suspend House maps drawn by an independent commission and replace them with redrawn districts adopted by the Democratic-controlled Legislature. Those new districts would be in effect for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections,” the AP noted.
