Russia has launched an attack with drones and missiles against the capital of Ukraine, kyiv, including a rare blow in the city center, killing at least eight people and hurting boxes from others, authorities said.

The powerful explosions illuminated the sky prior to Atta on Thursday, leaving smoke columns while the Russian projectiles damaged the buildings in multiple districts of the Ukrainian capital.

The assault marked the first major combined in kyiv in weeks, occurring as the peace initiatives led by the United States struggle to win impulse in the three -year conflict.

President Volodymyr Zenskyy said at least eight people were killed in the assault.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said two children were among those killed, citing preliminary information.

The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, characterized him as a “mass attack” that caused extended damage. He said that at least 38 people were injured, including 30 who entered the hospital.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration, reported that Moscow launched ballistic and cruise missiles along with Shahed drones designed by Iranians of multiple directions to residential buildings “systematically.”

The rounds of the red plotter scratched by the night sky when the defenders tried to intercept drones about the city center, with at least one missile that seemed to be knocked down. Approximately 100 residents sought refuge in a subway station, some in sleeping sacks or pets.

A five -story building collapsed in the Darnytskyi district, while a shopping center was hit in the city center, said Klitschko.

Ukrainian officials also reported a Russian strike in the Zaporizhia region on Thursday.

The Russian authorities said that more than 100 Ukrainian drones destroyed during the night, while an attack, according to reports, captivated a fire in the oil refinery in the Krasnodar region without casualties.

Russian forces have been making slow but stable territorial gains in recent months as diplomatic efforts have intensified. Recently, Trump held high profile meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, and then with Zenskyy, as well as European allies.

However, diplomatic progress remains limited. Ukraine seeks Western security guarantees against future Russian attacks before ending any peace agreement. Moscow has dismissed kyiv’s demands as non -reista Western peace maintenance forces, partularly opponents in Ukraine.

Zenskyy announced Wednesday that Ukrainian officials would meet their American counterparts in New York on Friday. The Ukrainian leader said “very arrogant and negative signs of Moscow regarding negotiations”, asking that additional “pressure” forces Russia to take real measures. “
