Working with ICE to Do Arrests in Jail Will ‘Make the Situation Worse’

On Thursday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Source,” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) responded to a question about whether ICE cooperation with police in Minneapolis would make things better because arresting people in jails is safer by stating that this approach “is going to make the situation worse.”

Host Kaitlan Collins played a clip of border czar Tom Homan saying, “Minneapolis, you’re a sanctuary city. If you let us into your damn jail and we stop being a sanctuary city, we could arrest the bad guy in the safety of a jail… And the difference is, in places where it’s not a sanctuary, a cop can go into a jail and arrest an illegal criminal alien. But when you release them into the community, now, we have to send the whole team because we have to arrest someone in their territory, access, they have access to who knows what weapons. It makes it dangerous for the officer, it makes it dangerous for the foreigner and it certainly makes it dangerous for the community.”

Collins then asked: “Maryland is not a sanctuary state, obviously, as you know, Governor, do you think the administration is right about that, if there was cooperation with the police in Minneapolis?”

Moore responded: “No, because what you just said is not only factually incorrect, it’s operationally stupid, because what we know in the state of Maryland is that we actually follow the Constitution. We make sure the laws are followed. And the people of my state know that we don’t have a higher priority than public safety. The people who know that, the violent criminals in the state of Maryland, know that I have no patience for you. And what we also know is that, in our state, if someone commits a violent crime, particularly with a weapon of fire, we will have them handcuffed in 24 hours. It is the reason why, in the state of Maryland, we have one of the fastest drops in violent crime anywhere in the United States, violent crimes have decreased almost 50% since I have been Governor, and we help make your community safer but, frankly, it is going to make the situation worse.
