The Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, signed a bill on Saturday that will create a school election program of $ 1 billion, the largest initial financing for a program of his son in the nation.

The firm took place outdoors shortly after 2:00 pm in the governor’s mansion in Austin in front of a multitude of followers who included a large group of students to applaud Bevernoror. The event was taken live at least one Austin television station.

“Behind were the days when families are limited only to the school assigned by the Government,” said Abbott, moments before signing. “The day has come that allows parents to choose the school that is better for their child.”

The invoice will help parents pay the accredited registration of private school and school -related expenses. The law will enter into force on September 1; The program is expected to be launched at the end of 2026.

Attempts to create school choice in Texas have a long and controversial history in state policy.

After previous failed attempts, alleged threats of the governor to celebrate primaries of “bloodbath” against the members of the Republican Chamber, and a call from President Donald Trump, Abbott will finally obtain one of his main priorities in the finish line.

According to reports, the Rural Democrats and Republicans who fought against him argued that the program would damage the public schools that already fight. They affirmed that these schools are an important employer for working families and a resource center for many Texas students, many of which reside in low -income homes.

State Senator Brandon Creighton (R) is the author of Law SB 2, and described such “manufactured” criticism.

“There are 74 school choice programs throughout the country, almost 34 states now. One thing we know in certainty of the data is that the results of the students increase, increase security, increase university preparation,” Creighton said in an interview after the vote vote.

The majority of participating families will receive an amount equal to 85% of what public schools obtain for each student through state and local financing, approximately instead of between $ 10,300 and $ 10,900 per year for each one, which for the legislature for fortislative for legislative for legislative for legislative for legislative.

In his signature speech, Abbott specifically cited families with children who had mental disabilities that in some state schools did not receive the best attention they needed.

Children with disabilities are eligible for the same financing as other students, in addition to up to $ 30,000 in additional money, an amount based on what the State would spend on special education services for that student if they receive a public school. Origin students can receive up to $ 2,000 per year.

The money will flow to families through educational savings accounts, which essentially function as bank accounts administered by the State.
