On Monday’s broadcast of CNN International’s “The Brief,” Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-CA) said that with the war in Iran, “there are serious questions about exactly what the strategy is. We’ve seen this kind of whiplash back and forth.”

Host Jim Sciutto asked, “I’m wondering what your interpretation is of the administration’s and the president’s strategy on Iran, because, for weeks, they’ve been saying that the United States can, in fact, beat Iran into submission, and ultimately the president has said that Iran really wants to talk. But every day that the war continues, Iran continues to attack targets. It has now killed three U.S. service members over the weekend. Is the president’s strategy working or failing?”

Kiley responded: “Well, I want to say, first of all, that, of course, my heart goes out to the family of our lost service members, and we all want to make sure that we do everything we can to prevent further casualties and loss of life for Americans. But I think there are serious questions about what exactly the strategy is. We’ve seen this kind of back-and-forth whiplash. We’ve seen this high-wire act. We’ve seen the threats on the one hand, followed by negotiations and temporary agreements on the other. And that’s why I’ve “We said, from the beginning, that if we really want to have something lasting here, we need Congress and all interested parties to participate. So, that means engaging the Gulf states, engaging our allies and reaching the understandings that we can to achieve the objectives that are indispensable here, which is opening the Strait of Hormuz, ending this conflict and ensuring that Iran never gets a nuclear weapon.”
