Several people have been killed and other wounds in Vancouver after a driver led to a crowd at a Filipina street festival in the city of western Canada, according to the police.

Police said the incident occurred shortly after 8:00 pm on Saturday (0300 GMT on Sunday) in the sunset of the city in the Barcom neighborhood and the driver has been in custody.

The mayor of Vancouver, Ken Sim, said: “I am surprised and deeply sad for the horrible incident in the Lapu day event today.”

The festival commemorates an anti -colonial leader of the 16th century.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected and with the Filipino community of Vancouver duration of this incredible difficult moment,” Sim wrote.

A witness told CTV News about the Vancouver incident that he saw a black vehicle driving erratically in the festival area just before the crowd was beaten.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that “I am devastated to hear about the horrible events at the Lapu Lapu festival.”

“I sacrifice my deepest condolences to the loved ones of the murdered and injured, to the Canadian Filipino community and all in Vancouver. We are all mourning with you.”

Carney added that the federal government was closely monitoring developments as the investigation continues.
