India sees multi-phase trade deal with US as talks proceed

India is discussing an American commercial agreement structured in three sections and hopes to reach a provisional agreement before July, when the reciprocal rates of President Donald Trump are activated, in accordance with New Delhi family officials with the matter.

It is likely that the provisional agreement covers areas, including access to the industrial goods market, some agricultural products and addressing some non -tariff barriers, such as quality control requirements, people said, they ask that they are not identified because they are private.

The conversations are still on the wave and there is no clarity if the Trump administration has agreed to a three -stage process for a commercial agreement. The Minister of Commerce, Piyush Goyal, is currently in Washington on a four -day trip that ends on Tuesday, where he is expected to meet the United States commercial representative, Jamieson Greer, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to advance negotiations.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of External Affairs did not respond to more information requests. The USTR and commerce department did not immediately answer the questions.

The second stage of an India-EE agreement. UU. It can be a broader and more detailed agreement scheduled for around September to November, Indian officials familiar with the matter said, which probably covers the 19 areas described in the terms of reference agreed by the two parties in April. The moment for this part of the agreement can be aligned with an expected visit from Trump to India for the summit of Quad leaders, said one of the people.

The final stretch of the agreement will probably be an integral fixed agreement that would follow the approach of one from the United States Congress, possible concluding only next year, Indian officials familiar with the matter said.

India was one of the first countries to start trade negotiations with the United States after the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House in February shortly after the Trump Tok office. Both leaders agreed to increase trade and work to conclude the first section of the bilateral agreement for autumn this year. Since then, New Delhi has pointed out the possibility of “early mutual victories” before the autumn deadline.

While Indian officials say that conversations remain on their way, there have been signs of tension in recent days. Nueva Delhi seems to be adopting a tougher posture in negotiations, threatening retaliation tariffs on US goods last week. Trump has also affirmed that India sacrificed himself to reduce tariffs on US assets to zero, while minimizing any sense of urgency to reach a commercial agreement.

The comments of the American leader about his participation in the negotiation of a high fire between India and Pakistan also have a source of frustration in New Delhi. Trump has repeatedly said that he used as a negotiation tool to ensure a truce between India and Pakistan after four days of military conflict that had approached the two rivals in southern Asia to a total war. Indian officials have denied Trump’s claims.
