Hussein al-Sheikh is a veteran leader of Abbas Fatah movement and seen as a possible successor for him.

The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, has appointed a nearby assistant as vice president, said the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Hussein al-Sheikh was appointed “Deputy (Vice President) of the OLP leadership,” Wasel Abu Yousef, a member of the OLP Executive Committee, said on Saturday in a movement that positions Al-Sheikh as a possible SUCBAS.

Abbas, 89, created the vice -presidency position during the 32nd session of the Palestinian Central Council in Ramallah earlier this week.

Duration The session, Abbas reaffirmed his commitment to initiate a “National Integral Dialogue”, whose objective is to involve “all the Palestinian factions to achieve reconciliation and reinforce the national unit,” said the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Abbas also informed the committee about “the next political efforts aimed at stopping Israeli aggression and genocide war in the Gaza Strip.”

These include guaranteeing the rapid entry of humanitarian and medical aid, a complete Palestinian governance on Gaza and pressing for a total Israeli withdrawal of the enclave as “a step towards the launch of a state -owned Palinalt process for the palainal of Palanal de Endenpendent as its capital,” according to Wafa.

The appointment follows years of international pressure to reform the OP and occurs when the Arab and Western powers imagine an expanded role for the Palestinian authority (PA) in the postwar governance of the Gaza Strip.

Founded in 1964, the PLO has the task of negotiating and signing international treaties on the Palestinian being, while the AP is responsible for governance in limited parts of the occupied Palestinian territory.

The OP is an umbrella organization that includes several Palestinian factions, but not the Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Sheikh, 64, is a veteran leader of Abbas Fatah Movement, who dominates the PA, and is considered close to the president.

The Aref Jaffal analyst said that the new role was created to pave the way for some to take the reins of Abbas, “since there are many things that the Palestinian situation requires.”

“The Palestinian political system is already miserable, so I believe that all these arrangements are a prelude to create an Abbas successor,” Jaffal, director of the Al-Marsad Electoral Monitoring Center, told AFP.

The OLP Executive Committee will hold another meeting next Saturday to appoint a new general secretary.
