On Tuesday’s broadcast of Bloomberg’s “Balance of Power,” Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) claims that President Donald Trump is “trying to steal an election by making it impossible for people to vote.”
Meeks said: “The president is trying to [do] What I call as an African American, Jim Crow 2.0, which prevents people from voting and puts all kinds of obstacles for people, almost 30 or 40% of the country, many women will now have obstacles to vote, because if they use their husband’s name, they would not have their maiden names on their new ID, on their driver’s license, which will not be legal. Your birth certificate will not match your current name. People won’t be able to afford to buy a passport, because if you look at 30%, 40% of Americans don’t have passports now, and the period of time in which they can get one will probably make them ineligible to vote in this election.”
He continued: “Why is he doing that? It’s because his favorability rating has dropped below 40% by a huge margin, and he’s dragging all the Republicans with him in the House and the Senate. And because of that, he’s trying to steal an election by making it so people can’t vote. But that’s not going to happen… I don’t think that will see the light of day.”
