Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has alleged that former Vice President Kamala Harris’ staff asked him if he was a double agent for Israel when they examined him as a potential 2024 running mate.
Writing in his new memoirs, Where we keep the lightThe prominent Democratic governor alleged that the former vice president’s investigative team examined his views on Israel, primarily because he was Jewish.
“Had he been a double agent for Israel?” Shapiro wrote, describing his offended response to a last-minute question from the research team. When he posed the question because of its obvious anti-Semitic overtones, the team said, “Well, we have to ask.”
The interrogator, former White House counsel Dana Remus, reportedly asked: “Have you ever communicated with an undercover Israeli agent?” Shapiro recalled saying in response: “If they were undercover, I responded, how the hell would I know?”
While Shapiro doesn’t envy Remus for following instructions, he noted that the questions illustrated “a lot about some of the people around the vice president.”
According to the New York TimesNeither a representative for Dana Remus nor Kamala Harris commented on the allegation.
“Mr. Shapiro, an outspoken critic of what he saw as anti-Semitism on college campuses amid the war between Israel and Hamas, wrote that he faced skepticism about that record during the investigation,” the report said. Times. “When Ms. Harris asked him if he ‘would be willing to apologize for statements he had made, particularly about what I saw happening at the University of Pennsylvania,’ he responded no, he wrote.”
“I believe in freedom of expression and I will defend it with all my might,” he wrote. “Most of the speech on campus, even that I disagreed with, was peaceful and constitutionally protected. But some was not peaceful.”
“I wondered if these questions were being asked only of me, the only Jew in the race, or if everyone who had not held federal office was being questioned about Israel in the same way,” he also wrote.
While Shapiro praised the investigative team for being “professional and serious,” he admitted to having “a knot in my stomach during all of this.”
This is not the first time Shapiro has criticized Kamala Harris and her team for their treatment of him during the investigation process. As Breitbart News reported in December, the governor of Pennsylvania accused the former vice president of promoting “blatant lies” in her memoirs. 107 daysfor accusing him of having taken control of the conversation when he interviewed him as a possible running mate.
“That is complete nonsense. I can tell you that their stories are simply blatant lies,” he said. The Atlantic.
The Atlantic He recalled some of the questions Kamala Harris claimed to have asked him during the interview, such as the size of the vice president’s Naval Observatory home and whether the governor could loan Pennsylvania art for the residence.
“I mean, she’s trying to sell books and cover her ass,” Shapiro said. The Atlantic He then claimed he backtracked and said, “I shouldn’t say ‘cover his ass’. I don’t think that’s appropriate. He’s trying to sell books. Period.”
