Israel and Turkey vie for Japanese drone order

Japan has recently been examining the acquisition of the Israel Heron Mark II UAV Aerospace Industries, as part of a budget of 1 billion yen ($ 6.3 billion) for the acquisition of UAV, as reported by the “Defense Blog” website. Now, the “Army Recognition” website reports that Japan is also examining the UAV manufactured Turks that are considered as good technological but are cheaper. Japan is not a significant export market for Israel, mainly due to Tokyo’s relatively low defense budget. Japan’s defense budget grew 21% in 2024 to around $ 55.3 billion, but remains low compared to countries such as Ukraine, Saudi Arabia and Germany. While NATO recently raised its defense objective from 2% to 5% of GDP, Defense Minister Nakatani, announced this year that Tokyo would only increase its 2% defense budget by 2027.

As for drones, the Japanese have allocated $ 261 million in the 2025 defense budget to buy MQ-9B sea drones Seaguardian for maritime recognition missions. At the same time, $ 20 million are destined to buy small attack drones, with which the Japanese because increasing security in the islands in the southwest of the country. The greatest threat from the Japanese point of view, similar to most countries in the Asia and Pacific region, is China, followed by North Korea.
