The MEA pointed out that the discussions covered a wide range of issues and aimed to achieve a mutually beneficial agreement. Jaiswal added: “With regard to the United Indian relationship, allow me to tell me that we are still committed to taking this special association, the comprehensive global strategic association that we have to the United States, forward and new heights.”
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry also issued a statement confirming that Brendan Lynch, the United States chief negotiator for the bilateral commercial agreement of India-United States, visited India for meetings. Indian officials were led by the Special Secretary of the Department of Commerce.

Agreement to intensify conversations
According to the Ministry of Commerce, “recognizing the lasting importance of bilateral trade between India and the United States, the discussions were positive and with a vision of the future, which covered varied aspects of the trade agreement. The conversations mark the continuation of the efforts launched in March this year when both nations began to negotiate a bilateral commercial agreement (BTA) fair, balanced and mutual. The objective is to complete the first stage in October-November 2025.
Tariffs emit a shadow
The negotiations arrive in the context of the tariff measures imposed by US President Donald Trump. In July, Washington raised a 25 percent rate on Indian goods, which then doubled to 50 percent in August, citing the continuous imports of Russian oil from India. High tariffs have added urgency to discussions on a possible provisional agreement.
India, however, has expressed Conerns about the demands of the United States to open its agricultural and dairy markets, sectors considered highly sensitive, given its role in providing livelihoods to millions.
