On CNN’s “The Source” Thursday, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) said he would not support any attorney general candidate who makes excuses for the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Host Kaitlan Collins said, “Do you think the president made the right decision in firing Pam Bondi today?”
Tillis said: “I’m not really sure what the basis was for saying that potentially another nominee would come before the Judiciary Committee. It’s too early for me to understand the reasoning behind this. I had a good relationship with General Bondi. I’ve heard that some of the reports may be a frustration on the president’s part in pursuing certain cases. You know my position. I have a problem with some of the cases they’ve investigated, like what I think is the bogus case against Chairman Powell. So if it’s based on that kind of frustration, I would have to “I respectfully disagree with the president. If there are other facts related to other matters that I have not seen reported, I will reserve judgment.”
He added: “For me, the threshold for someone to follow Pam Bondi ends the moment I hear that they said something that excuses the events of January 6. I have been very clear about that. So I hope that whoever they have in mind to follow General Bondi was very clear about my position on January 6. That is why I did not support two other candidates who came through the Judiciary Committee, and I will not support any candidate who thought that any element of January 6 was excusable.”
