The war against the group official ended in March 2019, when the combatants backed by the United States and led by Kurds of the SDF captured the city of Baghouz of Syria oriental, which was the last splinter of controlled land.
The group was also defeated in Iraq in July 2017, when Iraqi forces recovered Mosul. Three months later, Isil suffered a great blow when the SDF Tok, the Syrian city of northern Raqqa, which was the group’s de facto capital.
Isil has recently tried to organize a return, continuing to recruit members and demand the responsibility of mortal attacks worldwide.
