Doctors in the U.S. are worried because wrong medical advice is messing things up for patients. Here’s a simple explanation of how serious the problem is and why it matters, based on what’s been happening and what doctors are noticing.
Doctors Seeing More Patients with False Info
A huge 86% of doctors believe the spread of wrong medical details has gone up in the past five years, and half say it’s gone up a lot. It’s worse in the countryside, where 38% of doctors often see patients who believe fake info, compared to fewer in cities and suburbs.
Last year, 61% of doctors often had patients who had wrong info, and a scary 57% believe it is harder to give good health support because of this.
Who Should You Believe: Doctors or Patients?
Almost every doctor, like 97%, feels they can spot and correct wrong health details. But here’s the catch: 40% don’t think their patients can find good, real details themselves.
Dr. Gary Price said we haven’t been doing enough to guide patients and has said we need to meet patients where they get their info.
It’s Not Just About COVID
Fake details about COVID and shots are still around, but now it’s about other things like losing weight, diet pills, mental health, other vaccines, sicknesses, and diabetes.
One study found:
44% of doctors think over half the COVID details patients have is wrong.
72% say it makes treating COVID harder and hurts patients.
51% think doctors sharing false info is a big deal, compared to 41% of the public.
Make People Answer for What They Say
Doctors want something to be done. A total of 77% want medical groups to punish doctors who spread fake info on purpose. They’re less sure about punishments from courts (65%). This shows doctors are mad at those who lie about science, often without anything happening to them.
Big Problems for Health
False info doesn’t just hurt medicine. It hurts everyone because:
People don’t trust as much: even if only 21% of people say they trust doctors less, 68% of doctors think patients trust them less.

Health problems get worse: false info has made people not want shots, treat themselves the wrong way, and more.
The world is more split because lies target people who are easily fooled and push out true posts.
How to Stop Fake Info: Lots of Ways
Talk to Patients Where They Are:
Doctors like Price say to talk to patients away from hospitals because they get info from TV, talk shows, and online stars.
Guide People on Media and Health:
Groups like the AMA want to show people how to notice and fight wrong info.
Watch Doctors:
Medical groups should punish doctors who share fake info and make rules for health support.
Have People Who Are Liked Online Post More Truth:
Trust is important between doctors and patients. Studies show that more trust in doctors means less belief in lies.
