The white smoke is coming out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signing that a Pope has been chosen to direct the Catholic Church.
That means that the winner obtained at least 89 votes from the 133 cardinals who participated in the conclave to choose a successor of Pope Francis.
The crowd in the Plaza de San Pedro exploded in cheers. The name will be announced later, when a superior cardinal pronounces the words “Habemus Papam!” Latin to “We have a Pope!” Of the Basilica of Loggia or San Pedro.
The cardinal then reads the birth name of the winner in Latin and reveals the name he has chosen to be called.
Then the new Pope is expected to make his first public appearance and impart a blessing of the same lodge.
