A fugitive dog called Valerie has been captured after a 529 -day adventure, transfixing Australia while wandering an island full of kangaroos, tsiravies, koala bears and penguins.

The miniature Dachshund had eluded search engines on Kangaroo Island since November 2023, only rarely appearing in diffuse glimpses trapped by night cameras that showed her pink neck.

“Valerie has been rescued safely and is alive and well,” said the wildlife group that spent months tracking the cunning canine on the island of southern Australia, said Friday night.

“We are absolutely excited and deeply relieved that Valerie is finally safe and is able to begin her transition to her beloved parents,” Kangala Wildlife published rescue on social networks, along with a video of The Pooch.

Valerie made its escape duration a camp with the owners Georgia Gardner and her partner Josh Fishlock, leaving a pen and the bush.

Its owners cool after search days on the island, which covers more than 4,400 square kilometers (1,700 square miles) or farms, nature reserves and steep cliffs.

The missing street dog was not seen for more than a year, and many maintained little hope of survival.

Then, the video surveillance and the locals begged to detect it, and the volunteers launched a search for the patient for the hound, which seemed to flee from people and cars.

“Valerie seems impossible to catch,” published wildlife rescuers on social networks last month.

In investing more than 1,000 hours, the volunteer search engines led more than 3,100 miles and deployed cameras, traps and lures.

“This rescue was a true testimony of the dedication and perseverance of our team, the unwavering support of the community and the power of collaboration,” Kangala Wildlife rescue wrote. “There were many challenging moments during the past month, and we are incredible grateful to all who played a role in bringing Valerie home.”

The black and white video fragments showed Valerie regularly visiting a trap site, configured with a dog for dogs, blankets and toys, the facilities also attracted tsnizks.

“Incredible grateful”

Finally, the aroma attracted it to the box of worn strips or a shirt used by its owner Georgia, Kangala Jared and Lisa Karran directors said in a video update.

“I was rummaging, finding small food hides all over the place. Then it went directly to the rear corner, which is where we wanted it,” said Jared Karran.

“I pressed the button and appreciated, everything worked perfectly: the remote control fell and everything was assured.”

When the four -legged escape artist got used to her new environment, Lisa Karran got into the box to be with her.

But she entered from the top to avoid opening one side.

“We were no way letting that sausage dog flee again on us,” said Jared.

Upon his return to civilization, Valerie was treated with dog food and his favorite of roast chicken.

Dimensioning the adventurer, Jared said he was surprisingly small.

“I think he looks quite large in the camera. When I saw her in real life, she is small. He has an authorization of an inch under his belly, small legs.”

Despite their modest dimensions, the Dachshund are “game for anything”, according to the American Kennel Club.

“Raised to be an independent hunter or dangerous prey, they can be good to the point of the eruption and a little stubborn,” he says.

The owner of Valerie, Gardner, said in a publication on social networks that he was “incredible grateful” with the volunteers who helped find his dog.

“For anyone who has lost a pet, their feelings are valid and never lose hope.”
