ICE Cancels $3.8 Billion Contract for Immigrant Tent Detention Camp at Fort Bliss — ProPublica

In an unusual movement, the administration of President Donald Trump has canceled a $ 3.8 billion contract to build an immigrants detention camp in Fort Bliss, Texas, a few days after issuing it.

That does not mean that the work gained progress. The sources told Propublic that the administration still intends to move forward with the plan to build a store arrest camp in Fort Bliss. On Wednesday a visit to the site for interested contractors was made.

The work promises to be very sought after, since Trump officials plan to pour billions of dollars in buildings detention facilities as part of the president’s impulse to deport more immigrants.

Why the contract was published and then canceled is an unknown.

Immigration and Customs Control of USA.

Propublicica published a company profile on April 11, describing its rise in execution facilities at music festivals in a government hiring giant that, like other suppliers, pursues billions of dollars in planned contracts planned under Trump. Company’s executives discovered Propublic, had hired more than a boxes from former government experts as he builds his business over the years. Recently, the hiring included some former ICE high -ranking officials, the agency that would be responsible for carrying out the promises of Trump’s mass deportation.

Then, on April 13, the Administration reversed the course and terminated the contract with “convenience” resources, according to the data published in the Federal Contracting site.

An ICE spokesman confirmed that the prize was made and then canceled, and that “an acquisition action reviewed for Fort Bliss is currently active and continuous.” The agency did not answer questions about why it reversed the course.

Implemented resources has not responded to comments requests. On its website, the company says that it is “dedicated to providing the support of the installation and logistics services, at any time and anywhere.”

The award and cancellation of such a large contract to a company in such a short time is extremely unusual, according to a propublic review of the contracting data of a decade.

In plying documents, the government said it needs an installation with the ability to keep thousands of immigrants before being deported.

It is possible, but not yet clear, that the resources implemented could hire after a subsequent bidding round. It is likely that it is not the only bidder interested in work, which could be divided into two pieces.

Since mid -March, ICE has housed the detainees in the facilities in El Paso, Texas, operated by deployed resources, which was previously used by customs and border protection of the United States. The Defense Department awarded the resources deployed a contract to administer the site for ICE, a spokesman from ICE to Propublic said.

The current and previous officials of the agency said that the ice arrested in the facilities of the tents has, which in the past generally hero to the people for more short periods of time, increases the significant conerns on the possible risks of health and safety. An ICE official at a recent border security conference said that the resources deployed were adding more rigid structures inside their tents, which could address such Conerns.

Trump, when he returned to office in January, signed a series of executive orders that declare an emergency at the border and enlisting the military to help with the application of immigration. At the beginning of April, the Administration issued a request for offers in new detention facilities throughout the country that could be worth up to $ 45 billion.

The avalanche of immigration contracts occurs when the Trump administration destroys federal programs and dismisses thousands of workers in other government wings.
