On MS NOW’s “The Briefing” Thursday, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said that if Democrats gain control of “one or both Houses of Congress” in the midterm elections, they could sue to stop the Justice Department’s so-called anti-weapons fund.
Blumenthal said: “I think Trump may have taken the Republicans in the Senate too far. The ballroom itself was absolutely abhorrent to them because it’s deeply unpopular, and they didn’t want to vote on it. And behind the scenes, I’ll tell you, several of my Republican colleagues told me that they were absolutely delighted that the parliamentarian declared that he couldn’t be part of the reconciliation package. And now Trump was forcing them to vote on something that would actually potentially doom them to their downfall this November. And again I spoke to Republican colleagues who said there was no way they would vote for it, even before Blanche came to talk to them.”
He added: “I think there’s a real chance that conscience will show itself. And I know we’ve said it over and over again, but now is the time. And there are other remedies to the possibility of legislation like these amendments that we’re offering, the possibility even of getting some of this money back if there’s a Democratic administration. The possibility that one or both Houses of Congress, should we take control of them, could sue to stop it. These kinds of potential avenues of remedy and reparation are there, apart from whatever Republican colleagues do, but there is also the possibility of real action driven by conscience.”
