NATO Rushes Deal to Commit on Higher Defence Spending

The NATO Foreign Ministers began to meet in Antalya, Turkey, Wednesday when they rush to boost defense expense and meet the demand of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, or a disbursement of the GDP of five percent.

AFP reports that the two -day meeting seeks to forge a commitment agreement that keeps Trump happy and committed to the group almost six weeks before the leaders are face to face with the president in The Hague.

Trump has accumulated pressure before the summit by insisting that NATO dedicates five percent of GDP to defense with promises already made, as Breitbart News reported. The AFP report establishes what is coming for NATO:

The NATO Chief, Mark Rutte, has submitted a proposal for the allies to compromise 3.5 percent or direct military spending in 2032, as well as another expenditure of 1.5 percent or broader released security.

That would deliver to Trump the number of headlines that requires enough margin of maneuver to European allies who are fighting only to reach the current NATO spending threshold or two percent.

“Trump will be able to claim the victory and will say that NATO will spend five percent,” a NATO senior diplomat, speaking under anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

“Actually, it will be more complicated than that, but that will be the essential political message of the summit.”

Countries with the most likely to fight with that goal include Canada, Spain and Italy, which still limp towards two percent, says the AFP report.

“This new HAHR commitment or investment plan will include all the necessary capacity objectives for NATO allies to deter and defend, but also includes as mobility, infrastructure, necessary infrastructure, cyber security.

“It is definitely more than just missiles, tanks and Howwolzers, but at the same time, it has to be related to the defense. It is not a grip bag for everything you could imagine.”

Trump has previously criticized the cost of war in Ukraine for US taxpayers through the main military aid packages and made it clear that he wants to change more of the fiscal burden of return through the Atlantic.
